SAFCEI is offering a new series of workshops to eco-congregation members, to build skills and empower eco-congregations to become centres of environmental excellence in their communities.

SAFCEI believes that people of faith at local level can share experiences, network with each other, and learn from each other how best to implement and bring the changes necessary to sustain life and protect the earth for future generations.

We decided to offer this training to Green Team/Environmental ministry leaders or any other enthusiastic members to help them get practically engaged with eco-justice issues.

SAFCEI understands that faith leaders’ agendas are packed and that they are often stretched to uphold a number of programmes in their community – we would therefore like to focus on congregation members and equip them with skills and knowledge to build environmental resilience and advocacy capacity.

For SAFCEI, witnessing for the earth involves:

  • Local actions at faith community level to demonstrate a way of living that restores rather than destroys nature and human community.
    • In our theology, teachings and worship activities
    • In our care for the resources given to us
    • In our witness to the wider community
  • Sharing stories of hope with other faith communities to inspire them to take similar actions and share their stories.
  • Challenging faith leadership and government to protect earth’s living systems including human society as a matter of core-witness and faith.

The training – on 4 - 5 August in Cape Town at the Schoenstatt Centre, Constantia and 16-18 September in Johannesburg at the Lumko Retreat Centre, Benoni - is open to faith community members ages 18 and up. We encourage you to also send youth, who are actively involved in faith communities – this programme will certainly be exciting, interactive and build leadership skills.

If you have time to dedicate to training and implementation; and a passion for addressing environmental injustice, please complete the application form (available here) and send it to SAFCEI, together with a letter of motivation from your faith leader.
