ACCORDING TO THE QUR’AN, THE SIN OF HARMING HUMANITY AND ENVIRONMENT OUTWEIGHS THE BENEFIT – THEREFORE, STOP NUCLEAR!

As the world remembers the devastation and loss of life as a result of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima (6 August 1945) and Nagasaki (9 August 1945), SAFCEI members – faith leaders and communities from different backgrounds and viewpoints – speak out about the moral and ethical reasons to reject nuclear. Here Moulana Shu-Aib Appleby from the Muslim Judicial Council shares some scriptures from the Qur’an that guide Muslim decision-making. Appleby also shares some reasons, based on scripture, to reject nuclear energy...

“As Muslims the guiding principles from the Qur’an informs us on how we ought to reach a decision. History gives us the luxury of hindsight and the necessary examples, and evidence, to confirm our position. As we reflect on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, let us consider the destruction of lives and environment, which lingers painfully in the lives of the victims and generations which followed, should never happen again,” says Appleby.

“It is clear that no matter how effective pro-nuclear advocates want to show the benefits of nuclear energy, human beings know that the harms and potential threat of genocide on all life is greater with regards nuclear energy. As Muslims, the juristic ruling of daf’ al dharar (removal of harm) and jalb al manfa'a (procurement of benefit) clarifies our position on nuclear energy with a clear "Stop the Nukes!"

“The message of the Qur’anic verse in Chapter 2 verse 219 is clear, the sin of harming humanity and environment outweighs the benefit. This defines our principled position on nuclear energy,” adds Appleby.

“All Life is sacred as the Qur’an says, "Do not kill a living being which Allah has made sacred" ... (6:151). Our love for all life outweighs our personal desire for wealth, prestige and power, if it comes at the expense of others. As we pray for the victims and their loved ones, our prayer should translate into action, to ensure that it never happens again! Furthermore, we also have a responsibility to protect future generations from the evil effects of nuclear technology.”
