RE:   NUCLEAR POWER PLANT PROCUREMENT – LEGAL CHALLENGE

Secrecy continues to shroud government’s procurement of 9600 MW of nuclear energy (up to eight nuclear power plants) as part of the rollout of its planned national nuclear procurement programme.

ELA-Jhb and SAFCEI believe that the procurement of 9600 MW of nuclear energy has significant, long term consequences for South Africa and electricity users, and requires an open, transparent and lawful process.

Efforts by environmental justice organisations ELA-Jhb and SAFCEI calling upon government to engage transparently with the public on, and to follow due legal process regarding, the proposed nuclear procurement have fallen on deaf ears.

As a consequence, ELA-Jhb and SAFCEI have been left with no satisfactory remedy other than to approach the courts for appropriate relief.

ELA-Jhb and SAFCEI invite members of the press to a briefing on the launching of their legal challenge.
