Supported by Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and in preparation for the UN climate conference to be held in Durban in December, SAFCEI is working energetically to raise awareness and understanding of climate issues in our region, and working with our partners to increase pressure on the world’s nations to come to a fair, ambitious and legally binding outcome in Durban. Our events:
Sunday 27th November: Mass rally of the faithful. The day before the 2011 COP commences, a major gathering of faiths, led by prominent religious leaders, will happen in Durban. The purpose is to issue a clear call to the political leaders of the world that for the sake of our people and our planet, and in obedience to our Creator, COP 17 must arrive at an agreement based on moral principles that help protect and preserve the world for future generations.
Sunday 4th December: Coordinated services of worship service to pray for the success of the talks.
Our earlier activities
South African workshop on faith and climate change: Durban, 20/21 September, for South African faith leaders to motivate and inspire the faith communities of South Africa to pray for and participate in the COP faith events.
Partners: South African Council of Churches, Indalo Yethu
Pan-African conference: “Climate justice for sustainable peace”: 7th to 9th June at the UNEP HQ Centre in Nairobi, co-hosted with the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), PROCMURA, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) who provided the venue at the UN Centre in Nairobi.
