Ramadaan is a time of spiritual focus and reflection on the past year and a time to re-connect with your beliefs. Have you ever thought of the Ramadaan as a period of eco-consciousness? It is a time in which communities travel to the mosque together, reducing their carbon footprint as they carpool to their destination. It is a time of fasting: an abstinence from our usual consumerist patterns and a gratitude for the food and water God has provided for us. As it says in the Qur’an:“Eat and drink but waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters.” – 7:31.
So here are some links with ideas on how to further green your Ramadaan:
- ‘Waste 2 food or food 2 waste?’ by Green Sheikh (in Green Prophet online magazine) on the environmental and social benefits of Ramadaan.
- Go Green this Ramadan (6 steps) by Arwa Aburawa In this blog, Reginald James gives tips on greening the Ramadan
- Ramadan toolkit for 2011 by Green Muslims, in which each day highlights an Ayah, a quote, or a hadith that aspires to inspire you to action. The “challenge yourself” section of the day gives you a suggestion in how to adjust your habits, and the “reflection” section hopes to help you analyze your current habits in order to make the habit-forming both action-oriented and intellectual.
Ramadan can be enhanced to be a truly green month, and Muslims, with all people of faith, can live up to their responsibility to be the true stewards on Earth.
Tell us how you greened your Ramadaan and we will share your story in our next newsletter!
Ramadan Mubarak!
